HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam triumphed at the Asian Open Youth Xiangqi (Chinese Chess) Championship – Việt Nam 2018, which concluded in the northern province of Quảng Ninh on Thursday.
Việt Nam won 17 gold medals, 22 silvers and 25 bronzes in the standard, rapid and blitz chess categories to take the lead. China were the runners-up with 13 golds, five silvers and five bronzes.
Hoàng Nhật Minh and Đinh Trần Thanh Lam were the top performers, winning three golds each in the U8 boys and U10 girls categories respectively.
Kiều Bích Thủy bagged gold in the 20-year-old group, while Phan Huy Hoàng picked up two golds in the 10-year-old group. Phan Nguyễn Công Minh defeated Chinese player Hua Chen Hao to secure victory in the 14-year-old group.
According to Vice Chairman of the Việt Nam Xiangqi Federation Đàm Quốc, Vietnamese chess players who performed well in the tournament will be selected to train for the 2020 Asian Games.
The event attracted the participation of 120 players from 17 teams of six countries and territories, competing in age groups from under eight to under 20 for boys and girls. — VNS
