HÀ NỘI — Young Vietnamese tennis talent Nguyễn Văn Phương has qualified to compete in the Australian Open Junior Championships, scheduled to be held from January 19-26 next year.
The 17-year-old player performed well in the junior tournaments in South Korea, Japan and China to earn the right to compete in the Grand Slam. He reached the quarter-finals in men’s doubles at the World Super Junior Tennis Championships in Japan last month.
This will be the first time Phương – who won the U18 ITF Junior Cicruit G4 – Hải Đăng Cup 2018 – will play in the Grand Slam.
In the world junior rankings announced on Wednesday, the Becamex Bình Dương player ranked 70th.
Việt Nam’s top tennis player Lý Hoàng Nam has competed in four Grand Slam events. Nam won the men’s doubles title in the 2015 Wimbledon Junior Championship along with his Indian partner Sumit Nagal to become the first Vietnamese tennis player to win a Grand Slam trophy.
At the ongoing Việt Nam Master tennis tournament, Vietravel Cup in Vinh City, Nghệ An Province, Phương defeated veteran Nguyễn Đắc Tiến and Việt Nam’s second-ranked player Trịnh Linh Giang. — VNS
