HÀ NỘI — U16 Việt Nam beat U16 Cambodia on Sunday in the first match of the 2018 AFF U-16 Youth Championship, which began in Indonesia on Sunday and runs till August 11.
Việt Nam started strongly but their early attacks were rebuffed by a sturdy Cambodian defence.
In the 35th minute, Việt Nam were awarded a penalty, which Đinh Thanh Trung duly slotted home.
As the second half started, head coach Vũ Hồng Việt made five substitutions and his side were able to hang on for the 1-0 win.
After the match, Việt said he was not pleased at the result and how Việt Nam played in, “We should have scored more goals. How they played was not also entirely well. Perhaps this is their first match so our young players were quite nervous and lacked confidence. Cambodia have advanced much in their skills, with good speed and a strong defence. Certainly, getting three points is an advantage for Việt Nam before the second match versus East Timor.”
