Top Vietnamese chess player Lê Quang Liêm took black and shared the score with host player, chess grandmaster Yu Yangyi, at the first round of the ninth Danzhou Super Grandmaster Chess Tournament held in China on Saturday.

HÀ NỘI — Top Vietnamese chess player Lê Quang Liêm took black and shared the score with host player, chess grandmaster Yu Yangyi, at the first round of the ninth Danzhou Super Grandmaster Chess Tournament held in China on Saturday.

Yu, who has an Elo rating of 2,762, constantly switched pieces with Liêm (Elo 2,728). After 37 moves, the two opponents were even with each other.

Yu is the second-ranked chess grandmaster in mainland China, and holds the highest Elo at the tournament.

In other matches, Chinese grandmaster Wei Yi drew with runner-up of Dortmund 2018 Vladimir Fedoseev, while Polish Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Elo 2,737) took black and beat Indian Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (2,718) after 70 moves.

Liêm will face Duda in the second round of the tournament, with Liêm taking white. — VNS
