HÀ NỘI — Powerlifter Đặng Thị Linh Phượng bagged a silver medal at the fourth Asian Para Games on October 24 in Hangzhou, China.
As defending champion Phượng was one of the favourites in the women's 50kg category. However, she faced a tough challenge at Hangzhou Xiaoshan Sports Centre with Wei Yi of the hosts.
While Phượng step by step lifted 98kg and 101kg before she failed with the 106kg weight in her three attempts, Wei was successful with 105kg in the first lift, setting a new Games record. It was 3kg heavier than Phượng's record set five years ago in the previous Games in Indonesia.
Wei failed in her second try at 110kg but managed it in her last attempt, breaking the record she had only just set.
The bronze went to Kraratpet Kamolpan of Thailand with a lift of 96kg.
In swimming, Vi Thị Hằng finished third in the women's 100m freestyle, S7 category in a time of 1min 20.58sec at the Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre's Aquatic Sports Arena.
She was behind China's duo Jiang Yuyan and Ke Liting who swam 1:11.53 and 1:18.56 to take gold and silver, respectively.
Việt Nam have secured four medals after two days of competitions. Earlier they won two bronze medals in the men's 49kg and 54kg powerlifting classes. — VNS
