HÀ NỘI — The Hà Nội Transport Department recently proposed the People’s Committee of Hà Nội invest more than VNĐ8 billion (US$345,000) to repair the tunnels of Thăng Long Boulevard in Hoài Đức District.

The tunnels were found to be degraded, flooded whenever it rained heavily and unable to ensure traffic safety for road users, the department said.

According to the department, heavy vehicles often use tunnel No 3, causing many cracks and subsidence on the road’s surface.

Besides, on the left side of the boulevard, the road section, leading from the tunnels to An Khánh Commune, has suffered from degradation and subsistence, causing danger for people in traffic, especially at night.

Many street lights have been broken, making it difficult for road users to drive at night.

Therefore, the department plans to fix the situation, including repairing the surface of the road inside the tunnels, rehabilitating the drainage system along the tunnels and systems of lighting and road signs in the tunnels.

The total investment of the project will be drawn from the regular budget of the city. If the committee approves the project, the repairs are expected to be implemented in 2020-21.

The boulevard, nearly 30km long, was opened to the public in 2010. It starts at the intersection of Láng-Hoà Lạc Road and Belt Road No 3 and ends at the intersection between Láng-Hòa Lạc Road, National Highway No 21 and Hồ Chí Minh Road.

The boulevard has six express lanes and two additional lanes for motorcycles and bicycles. It connects Hà Nội with satellite cities including Xuân Mai and Sơn Tây, and tourist sites such as Việt Nam Ethnic Villages, Ba Vì Mount and Hai Stream. — VNS
