British man arrested for armed robbery in HCM City

A British man has been taken into custody for allegedly robbing a convenience store on Bùi Viện pedestrian street in HCM City, city police have announced.

HCM CITY — A British man has been taken into custody for allegedly robbing a convenience store on Bùi Viện pedestrian street in HCM City, city police have announced. 

According to police in Nguyễn Cư Trinh Ward in District 1, John David Ablett, 44, brandished a knife and demanded money from employees at a convenience store in Nguyễn Cư Trinh Ward at 12am.

The man then fled to the September 23 Park in Phạm Ngũ Lão Ward with the money.

After being informed about the robbery, police from District 1, in co-operation with the ward’s police, chased and arrested the man.

The police seized a knife and VNĐ2.6 million (US$111) in cash.

At the police station, the man said he was wandering the streets with no money, so he chose to rob the convenience store, which was open all night.

The case is under investigation. — VNS
