Việt Nam and China continue work on humanitarian activities

The Việt Nam Red Cross (VNRC) and the Red Cross Society of China were committed to continue working together on humanitarian activities, officials said at a meeting between VNRC President Nguyễn Thị Xuân Thu and Deputy President of the Red Cross Society of China Wang Haijing in Hà Nội today.

HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam Red Cross (VNRC) and the Red Cross Society of China were committed to continue working together on humanitarian activities, officials said at a meeting between VNRC President Nguyễn Thị Xuân Thu and Deputy President of the Red Cross Society of China Wang Haijing in Hà Nội on Tuesday.

Thu said Việt Nam wanted to learn from the Red Cross Society of China’s experience in co-ordinating humanitarian aid and building safe communities to minimise risks caused by natural disasters and improve the capacity of VNRC staff.

“Việt Nam has a plan to build 10 safe communities in areas prone to natural disasters in northern border provinces,” said Thu.

Deputy President Wang Haijing hoped the two sides would continue to co-operate to improve the effectiveness of humanitarian activities and enhance understanding and relations between the two countries.

He said the two sides would co-operate on emergency relief, income increases for disadvantaged people and support for disadvantaged children.

The two societies would also join hands on information and experience exchange, healthcare, clean water and hygiene, community-based disaster prevention and skills training.

On the occasion, the Red Cross Society of China also committed a 1.5 million China Yuan (US$223,500) project to help the Việt Nam Red Cross develop safety communities.

The Red Cross Society of China has provided humanitarian aid worth VNĐ23 billion to Việt Nam for various activities such as emergency aid, healthcare, disaster prevention and staff training during from 2017-19. — VNS
