HÀ NỘI African swine fever posed a substantial threat to the pig farming industry despite the measures being taken to stop the disease from spreading, said Nguyễn Xuân Cường at the first meeting of the national steering committee for the prevention and control of ASF held on Tuesday in Hà Nội.

Cường warned that the disease would spread across the country very quickly unless localities and agencies took drastic measures.

The risk of the disease spreading was high due to adverse weather and the fact that most pigs were bred on a small scale, he said.

According to Nguyễn Văn Long from the Department of Animal Health, as of Monday, ASF had been reported in 21 cities and provinces. Nearly 65,000 pigs had been culled.

ASF was first reported in smallholdings, but since March 20, it has spread to farms operating on a wider scale. He cited a herd of 4,500 animals in Đông Tảo Commune, Hưng Yên Province’s Khoái Châu District, as an example.

To prevent the spread of ASF, Cường has instructed localities to adopt epidemic prevention, monitoring, detection and handling mentions to ensure prevention and control.

He asked breeders with big herds, particularly those with sows, to strengthen preventive measures to safeguard the piglets.

“There are still vehicles transporting pigs and pork products from northern to southern provinces. This must be stopped,” he said.

Cường also said that to ensure the long-term development of the livestock sector, including pig farming, Việt Nam was studying the production of a vaccine against ASF. VNS
