HÀ NỘI — An Earth Hour campaign was launched in Hà Nội on Sunday, sending the message “saving energy, protecting earth”.

The Earth Hour campaign in Việt Nam is an annual activity held for the last 11 years. It is hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), with the support of many businesses, especially Vietnam Electricity (EVN), which serves as the sponsor of the campaign.

In 2009, Việt Nam had only six provinces and cities across the country participating in the campaign, but now many localities nationwide are taking part, as well as organisations and businesses.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Director of the MoIT’s Energy Saving and Sustainable Development Department Nguyễn Thị Lâm Giang called on organisations, individuals, families and enterprises to take specific actions against climate change.

Võ Quang Lâm, EVN Deputy Director, said all employees of the group will actively take part in the Earth Hour campaign 2019 with many practical activities.

He said turning off lights during Earth Hour not only reminds people to save energy but also aims to protect the environment and adapt to climate change.

Each small action brings greater efficiency. The actions of each person contribute to protecting the earth, he said.

During March this year, many meaningful activities such as exchange programmes, workshops, art exhibitions, and a light turning-off ceremony will be held within the framework of the campaign.

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It has been described as the largest world grassroots movement for the environment, with the involvement of around 7,000 cities in 172 countries and territories so far. — VNS
