NGHỆ AN — Thousands of employees of a garment company in central Nghệ An province on Tuesday afternoon went on strike after discovering the company had cut their housing, petrol and hazardous working condition allowances.
HAI VINA Kim Liên Ltd Company in Nam Giang Commune, Nam Đàn District earlier announced a salary increase of VNĐ200,000 (US$9) per worker as of this month. However, employees discovered their pay packets were unchanged upon receiving this month’s pay.
The company explained that they cut the allowances, worth a total VNĐ450,000 per month, per worker.
Nguyễn Hồng Sơn, vice chairman of Nam Đàn District People’s Committee, told danviet.vn that local authorities discussed the issue with the company on Tuesday afternoon.
Sơn said the company did not violate any regulation because in the past, the company voluntarily offered the extra allowances, so it could remove them if it chose.
Sơn said the company should explain the policy to its employees.
Lao động (Labour) newspaper on Wednesday reported that the workers continued their striker and gathered in the company’s factory yard. — VNS
