Criminal investigation started against toll station robbers

Police in the southern province of Đồng Nai on Sunday started a criminal investigation against two men allegedly involved in the theft of VNĐ2.2 billion (US$100,000) from a toll station on the HCM City-Long Thành-Dầu Giây Expressway on the third day of the Lunar New Year.

ĐỒNG NAI — Police in the southern province of Đồng Nai on Sunday started a criminal investigation against two men allegedly involved in the theft of VNĐ2.2 billion (US$100,000) from a toll station on the HCM City-Long Thành-Dầu Giây Expressway on the third day of the Lunar New Year.

The suspects - Trần Tuấn Anh, 26, from the Mekong Delta province of Tiền Giang, and Nguyễn Vũ Hoàng Nam, 29, from the northern province of Nam Định, were arrested on Friday at Sài Gòn Railway Station.

They will be detained for four months while the investigation takes place.

It is reported that on Thursday morning, Tuấn Anh and Nam, armed with a gun and a machete and wearing masks, held up the toll station.

Police have recovered VNĐ1.7 billion ($73,200) of the stolen money. Two other men – one from HCM City and the other from Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu Province – handed over VNĐ700 million and VNĐ500 million respectively after learning about the robbery. They said Nam had asked them to keep hold of the money. — VNS
