BẠC LIÊU — Since Friday, some bus companies in the Mekong Delta Province of Bạc Liêu have doubled fares despite local authorities’ instructions not to hike them by more than 40 per cent.

Đức Trọng, Anh Tuấn and Mỹ Ngọc are among operators who have increased fares from VNĐ150,000-VNĐ160,000 (US$6.5-6.9) to VNĐ320,000 ($13.8) to take advantage of people returning to work after Tết (Lunar New Year).

Other companies have raised fares by more than 50 per cent.

A passenger travelling from Bạc Liêu to HCM City by a Đức Trọng bus said not only did the company double fares, it also added extra seats to carry more passengers than legally permitted.

Speaking to Vietnam News Agency by phone, Lương Phương Đông, deputy director of the province’s Department of Transport, said he had not received any complaints about the issue yet.

But he promised to take a closer look and impose strict penalties on operators flouting regulations. — VNS
