HÀ NỘI — The Pháp Vân-Cầu Giẽ Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Joint Stock Company has sent a proposal to the Directorate for Roads of Việt Nam to exempt road users from tolls on the first three days of the Lunar New Year.
The company director Phạm Văn Khôi said that the exemption aimed to help road users travel during the busy Tết holidays and give toll booth staff three days off.
“With the fee exemption, the time period for the company getting its investment back could be extended,” he said.
Head of the Directorate for Roads of Việt Nam Nguyễn Văn Huyện said that the toll fee exemption was allowed when a heavy traffic accident occurred within 700 metres of the toll station.
Huyện added that the toll fee exemption during the Tết holiday would be allowed if road investors used their money to compensate for tolls they didn’t collect.
Meanwhile, coach operators that regularly use the Pháp Vân-Cầu Giẽ highway applauded the proposal, saying that it would help reduce traffic jams at a key gate to Hà Nội.
Tô Quang Học, director of Phiệt Học Ltd Company, said his coaches usually ran on Thái Bình-Hà Nội route and saw heavy traffic jams at toll stations, especially those located at key gateways into the city.
Học suggested that the toll exemption should be considered pre-Tết and after the holidays when traffic was busier.
The Pháp Vân-Cầu Giẽ BOT project began collecting toll fees from October 2015. It is expected to collect enough money to gets its investment capital back in 17 years. — VNS
