KHÁNH HOÀ — A Tuesday evening railway accident in the central coastal province of Khánh Hòa killed one woman and injured four others including a five-year-old child, said an official of the provincial Phú Khánh Railway Company.

A seven-seat car – carrying four passengers and one driver – travelling from the Tu Bông market (Vạn Phước Commune, Vạn Ninh District) to a crossroads with Highway 1A was hit by a train while crossing the railway lines at about 6pm.

Witnesses said the train crashed into the car and sent it careening away from the track.

Four victims suffered multiple injuries including broken legs and other bones as well as head injuries. They were taken to Vạn Ninh District General Hospital. One victim died.

"Visibility on both sides is clear and the crossroads have full signs, but car drivers may not watch carefully," said an official from Phú Khánh Railway Company.

After the crash, a railway task force arrived quickly to handle the incident. The partially damaged SQN1 train was moved to the nearest railway station for repairs.

Võ Lục Phẩm, vice chairman of Vạn Ninh District People’s Committee, said that all the victims were local residents of Vạn Phước Commune and Vạn Gia Township.

On Wednesday morning, district People’s Committee officials came to the hospital to support the four injured victims and visit the family of the dead.

Further investigation is underway. — VNS
