HÀ NỘI — A cold spell is forecast to hit the northern region from Thursday night according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

The temperature is expected to drop slightly to around 20 degrees Celsius then fall dramatically to as low as 11 degrees Celsius on Sunday in lowland areas. The temperature in mountainous provinces may fall to 9 degrees Celsius.

The severe cold spell is expected to last from two to three days.

Due to the cold spell, the northern region will experience showers and scattered thunderstorms. Strong winds and hailstorms might also occur.

It is also expected to affect central localities from Thanh Hóa to Thừa Thiên-Huế.

Provinces in the south central region are likely to see moderate to heavy rain as well as thunderstorms.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Centre said this month could see two to three cold spells hitting the northern region.  VNS
