HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc has urged relevant ministries and agencies to prepare for the organisation of the 16th United Nations Day of Vesak (UNDV) celebrations, which is slated for May 12-14 next year in northern Hà Nam Province.
At a working session held yesterday in Hà Nội on the preparations for the event, PM Phúc stressed its importance, saying that the successful organisation of the UNDV would help to raise the position of Việt Nam in the international arena.
He also said it will confirm the consistent viewpoint of the Party and State of Việt Nam in respecting and ensuring the right to freedom of religion and belief of all citizens.
PM Phúc praised the National Vietnam Buddhist Sangha and relevant agencies for the preparations for the organisation of the UNDV and noted that focus should be paid not only to infrastructure but also content.
He urged relevant ministries to guide and create conditions for a successful organisation of the event.
The theme of the 2019 UNDV conference is ‘Buddhist Approach to Global Leadership and Shared Responsibilities for Sustainable Societies’.
It is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants, including heads of states, Buddhist leaders, scholars and Buddhists from about 100 countries and territories across the world.
The UN General Assembly on December 15, 1999 recognised the Day of Vesak to celebrate the thrice-sacred event of the life of the Buddha Gautama. The Buddhist community in different countries have organised activities to celebrate this day every year.
