NINH THUẬN — Some 1,100 tonnes of rice has been handed over to thousands of families in the south-central province of Ninh Thuận over the past three days.

About 16,800 households with a total of 74,200 people in five drought-hit districts received the aid packages, which were sourced from national reserves.

The provision, made at the order of Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, aims to help those facing the risk of food shortages caused by lingering drought in the province.

Each recipient was given 15kg of the grain for one month.

Đặng Thị Phấn, deputy director of the province’s Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, said authorities had worked on a plan for the distribution, with locals in remote areas prioritised.

“All the food has been distributed on time,” she said.

Villagers were happy to receive the aid, said Bá Thanh Thanh Trượng, vice chairman of the People’s Committee of Phước Nam Commune.

“Over the past year, villagers have been unable to produce crops because local water sources have run dry due to the impacts of climate change and the long drought,” he said, adding that many households were poor and their main source of income was agriculture. — VNS
