NINH THUẬN — Bạch Đằng Trading-Service Joint Stock Company on Thursday proposed restoring an old 84-km section of Tháp Chàm-Đà Lạt railway, with total investment of more than VNĐ8.2 trillion (about US$352 million) in the form of a public-private-partnership (PPP).
The company is collecting opinions from locals to complete the pre-feasibility study before submitting it to Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng.
In 2015, the Government approved a master plan on the development of Việt Nam’s railway transport, including the upgrade of the Tháp Chàm- Đà Lạt railway route, which has been closed since 1975 because of low profits.
The railway project is expected to attract more tourists to Đà Lạt City and Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm City where they can see stunning scenery, green mountains, and open spaces stretching to the Pacific Ocean.
Opened in 1928, the Tháp Chàm-Đà Lạt railway in the Central Highlands city of Đà Lạt connected to the main north-south Railway at Tháp Chàm Station in Ninh Thuận Province.
The old route has 12 stations and five tunnels. Most of the track has cogwheels that connect to the bottom of the train to provide traction when trains travel up and down hills.
Currently, only an upgraded 7km section of railway track from Đà Lạt City to Trại Mát Station is being used for tourism purposes. Four trains on the section transport tourists to Trại Mát Station. From there, they can visit Linh Phước Pagoda, a famous tourism attraction in Đà Lạt. — VNS
