CÀ MAU PROVINCE— The Cà Mau Cooperative Alliance plans to increase the number of agricultural co-operatives to 142 by 2020.
According to Đỗ Văn Sơ, chairman of Cà mau Cooperative, this is envisaged in the Government’s Decision No. 461/Qd ttg on setting up 15,000 co-operatives in the country.
Now there are 94 agricultural co-operatives out of a total of 150 with a combines charter capital of VNĐ225 billion (US$9.6 million).
Most of them breed livestock or are in aquaculture.
So far this year the province has established 19 new co-operatives and shut down four while 17 others have temporarily stopped functioning.
The number is increasing slowly, at the rate of just 14 a year, and this is due to a lack of resources, qualified managers and land and ineligibility for incentives, Sơ said.
Nguyễn Văn Tranh, deputy chairman of the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, called for preferential policies for co-operatives.
Besides, the province would train workers in management and technical skills, he added. —VNS
