THANH HOÁ — Early Thursday morning, North-South passenger train crashed into a truck when it was passing through the central province of Thanh Hoá, killing two and injuring 10 others.
The North-South route, the primary rail line that connects the two major economic hubs of the country, faced temporary disruption due to the incident.
The accident occurred at 00:30 on Thursday morning, confirmed later by the authorities of Tĩnh Gia District, the site of the accident.
According to initial report, the train number SE19, carrying 400 passengers en route from Hà Nội to HCM City, collided into a dump truck at a level crossing in Trường Lâm Commune.
“The collision caused the cab to fall over and six other carriages to run off the tracks, the truck was heavily damaged,” said the State-run Việt Nam Railway (VNR).
The two casualties were identified as the driver and co-driver of the train, who was trapped inside the toppled cab.
Injured passengers have been rushed to hospitals for medical care.
The cause for the accident is still being investigated as two guards of the level crossing were summoned by the police.
Deputy Prime Minister Trương Hoà Bình has ordered concerned authorities to review all level crossings across the country.
Cleared route
At 2pm the same day, VNR said the Hà Nội-HCM City line had resumed normal operations after 14 hours of urgent repairs.
To ensure safety, VNR has deployed alternative transport methods to carry 2,900 passengers from nine trains running the North-South line to circumvent the accident site.
VNR leaders have visited the families of the deceased and offered monetary support to the tune of VNĐ30 million, or US$1,300 for each.
Minister of Health Nguyễn Thị Kim Tiến, together with Vice Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety Khuất Việt Hùng, have visited three injured victims (all from Vinh City, Nghệ An Province) who are currently being treated in Tĩnh Gia General Hospital of Thanh Hoá Province.
Two seriously injured victims have been moved to the Việt Nam-Germany Hospital in Hà Nội, while three others were transferred to Nghệ An Province for care. — VNS
