HCM CITY — Nearly 28,000 high school teachers around the country are set to benefit from a programme meant for continuous professional development of teachers and principals to improve their capacity to teach the new curriculum.

Speaking at a conference held to gather feedback on the Enhancing Teacher Education Program from education departments and experts in southern provinces and cities, Dương Thị Hồng Hiếu, head of the HCM City University of Education’s training division, said with funding of US$100 million, including $95 million from the World Bank, the five-year programme has been implemented from 2017 to 2021.

Every high school in the country will choose one teacher for training while disadvantaged regions and schools offering multiple levels of education will send two.

Education departments and grassroots-level education divisions will also send one or two officials to attend the programme.

The HCM City University of Education will be in charge of training 7,489 teachers in the 19 southern provinces and cities.

The programme will also train the 70,000 school managers around the country.

Trương Văn Hùng, head of the HCM City Department of Education and Training’s professional and tertiary education division, said the programme should dovetail with local education development strategies to be successful.

It also should focus on ethics for teachers, he said.

Nguyễn Văn Phước, deputy head of the Education Division of HCM City’s District 3, said the programme should also focus on English training.

Vũ Thị Kim Dung, vice rector of Diên Hồng High School in the city’s District 10, said an annual survey should be done of attendees’needs to improve the programme’s efficacy.

Online and classroom learning should both be utilised for the programme, she said.—VNS
