HÀ NỘI — Construction of pavements in Ba Đình and Hai Bà Trưng districts continues despite an order by the capital city’s authorities, e-newspaper Vietnamplus reported.

The order was issued late last year by the municipal People’s Committee after some parts of newly paved sidewalks such as those on Lê Trọng Tấn and Nguyễn Trãi streets in Hà Nội reportedly cracked.

The committee ordered halting of work until investigation results were out.

A representative of Hoàn Kiếm District People’s Committee confirmed that pavements continued to be built on Quang Trung Street.

Workers were also paving the sidewalk of Nguyễn Trường Tộ Street in Ba Đình District. The stones measured 30x30sq.cm.

Vũ Quang Ánh, head of construction and investment management board of Ba Đình District, said sidewalks would facilitate easy movement of people close to Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday.

Stones have been removed from Nguyễn Trường Tộ Street, which is causing hindrance to pedestrians and affecting household-run businesses along the pavement, he said.

For this reason, the district People’s Committee had proposed to the city authorities to allow the continuation of pavement work.

Investigating agencies are still working with project management boards of districts.

In a related move, a representative of the construction and investment management board of Hoàng Mai District said the district authorities had invited local residents to supervise the pavement work.

The supervising residents found some low-quality works and told contractors to improve their quality.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Construction and Hà Nội’s relevant agencies have tested stone samples from the streets of Hoàng Mai District. The results show the stones from the sidewalks meeting technical criteria. — VNS
