HÀ NỘI – The National Women’s Congress for the 2017-22 tenure, taking place from today in Hà Nội, is a chance for delegates who represent women from all walks of life, ethnic groups, religions, ages and professions to share experiences and idea on bettering women’s lives in Việt Nam.

Y Giang, head of the Women’s Union of Rờ Khơi Village in Sa Thầy District, Central Highlands province of Kon Tum, said that the union’s efficiency at local levels is poor, as officials have little experience, knowledge or presentation skills.

She said she hopes the three-day congress will seek support policies for women in the new tenure, while diversifying operations to expand coverage and attract more members.

She proposed that the congress find measures to effectively implement the Law on Gender Equality. The union should also pay more attention to vocational training and creating jobs for women, as well as the training of skills for local officials in remote and mountainous areas, she said.

Meanwhile, President of the Women’s Union of Nha Trang City, south central Khánh Hòa Province, Nguyễn Thị Khánh Hòa suggested that the congress work out measures to help women in business through providing capital and suitable production models.

According to Hòa, it is crucial to eradicate illiteracy among women and improve their knowledge, while helping them access science and technology.

She stressed the need to promote the role of the union in helping women join political activities at all levels.

Trần Thị Phương Hoa, President of the Hà Nội Women’s Union, said that the training and appointment of women to important positions should be improved.

Particularly, the union should enhance its role in representing and protecting the rights and interests of women.

According to Hoa, representatives of the Women’s Union at all levels should be members of advisory councils on policy and law making to raise their voice during the drafting process.

Sharing Hoa’s opinions, President of the Đắk Lắk Women’s Union Nguyễn Thi Thu Nguyệt said that supervision activities of the union will help women promote their rights through the timely adjustments of laws and policies. — VNS
