ĐẮK LẮK — Two cases of Japanese encephalitis B were reported in the Central Highlands province of Đắk Lắk, Phạm Văn Lào, director of the provincial Department of Preventive Medicines, said.

The two patients are Nguyễn Thị Thu Sương, 14, from Krông Pắk District, and Nguyễn Thị Tâm, 15, from Cư Kuin District.

The two teens had high temperature, headaches and had not been vaccinated earlier against the disease.

At present, they are being treated at the Paediatrics Hospital No. 1 and No. 2 in HCM City.

Đắk Lắk authorities carried out an inspection of the two districts where the teens live and found signs of the Culex tritaeniorhynchus mosquito – the main vector of Japanese encephalitis B.

The disease often occurs in summer, from April to October, and is most widespread in June and July.

The provincial health sector cleaned up the affected areas and guided locals on steps to prevent the disease, including using mosquito nets while sleeping, keeping their homes clean, moving livestock and poultry cages far from their houses and using substances that kill mosquitoes. — VNS
