NGHỆ AN – The construction of the Cửa Hội Bridge that crosses the Lam River has begun in central Nghệ An Province’s Cửa Lò Town on Sunday.

The bridge connects the two central provinces of Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh.

Deputy Prime Minister Vương Đình Huệ and former National Assembly chairman Nguyễn Sinh Hùng attended the bridge’s groundbreaking ceremony.

The VNĐ1.5 trillion (US$45.1 million) bridge is built under a Public-Private Partnership contract with funding from the central State budget, the two provinces and the Civil Engineering Construction Corporation No 4 (Cienco4).

Nguyễn Xuân Đường, chairman of Nghệ An Province People’s Committee, said once completed, the four-lane bridge, which is 6.2km long and 12m wide, will open opportunities for economic and defence development in Việt Nam’s north central region.

He said the two provinces - Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh - had been waiting for the bridge eagerly.

The bridge project was part of a national coastal road plan until 2020 approved by Prime Minister in 2010 but the project’s commencement was delayed because of a financial shortage. -- VNS
