HCM CITY — Police in HCM City have rescued a South Korean man who jumped into a river in an apparent suicide attempt, authorities said on Saturday.

At around 1am on Friday, officers from Nhà Bè Commune Police were patrolling the area around Phước Long Bridge when they spotted a man jumping into the river.

Recognising signs that he may have been attempting to take his own life, the officers immediately launched a rescue operation. Working with local residents, they approached the man and used rescue equipment to bring him safely ashore.

After the rescue, police officers continued to support the man, arranging temporary accommodation and providing clothes and food while regularly checking on him.

According to a thank-you letter sent by the man, he entered Việt Nam on August 17 as a tourist and was scheduled to return to South Korea on August 25.

However, he said his business in South Korea had suffered prolonged losses and financial difficulties, leaving him with negative thoughts and prompting his impulsive action.

With support and encouragement from police officers, the man gradually calmed down and abandoned his intention to take his own life. He subsequently contacted his relatives, who arranged to take him to a safe place. — VNS
