HẢI PHÒNG — The northern port city of Hải Phòng deployed more than 11,000 personnel and hundreds of vehicles and equipment on Saturday morning to respond to the fourth typhoon of the the year, known by the international name of Narra, the municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment said.

Local authorities contacted 1,620 vessels with 4,499 crew members, ensuring no vessels remain unreachable or are operating in dangerous areas.

They are also working to ensure the safety of residents, vessels, coastal infrastructure, dyke and irrigation systems.

At 5:45am the same day, the northern province of Bắc Ninh issued a level II flood warning on the Thương river at Cầu Sơn hydrological station after the water level reached 15 metres, exceeding the level II threshold.

According to the provincial hydro-meteorological station, the province will continue to see moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon to August 24, with some areas likely to receive very heavy rainfall.

From the evening of August 24 to the night of August 25, moderate to heavy rain is forecast to continue, with rainfall of 30-80 millimetres.

Prolonged heavy rain is likely to flood crop-growing areas and residential neighbourhoods and disrupt traffic. There is also a high risk of flash floods and landslides in Sơn Động, Lục Ngạn, Lục Nam and Yên Thế communes.

Meanwhile, on Saturday morning, vice chairman of the Quảng Ngãi provincial People’s Committee Đỗ Tâm Hiển inspected flood damage and ongoing recovery efforts in Đắk Long border commune.

Heavy rainfall is gradually saturating soil and increasing landslide risk in many areas in western Quảng Ngãi communes. Residents have been urged to monitor warnings closely and follow authorities’ recommendations to prevent possible losses and damage. — VNA/VNS
