CẦN THƠ – A cargo boat carrying 25 tonnes of aquarium fish feed hit the stern of a ship early yesterday morning on the Hậu River and sank soon after.

The accident occurred 1km from the Cần Thơ bridge in the Mekong Detla’s Cần Thơ Province.

Due to the heavy load, the boat broke down and capsized immediately. The food was soaked in water. Luckily, the two people on board, a father and son, were safe.

The total property damage was estimated at more than VNĐ100 million (US$4,500).

The boat with a 35-tonne capacity was sailing from An Giang Province to Cần Thơ Province when the accident occurred.

The captain was identified as Nguyễn Văn Sông, 47, living in Hậu Giang Province.

Initial investigation revealed that the boat’s captain had limited visibility due to the darkness at the time of the accident, which took place at 3am.

The Ninh Kiều District police mobilised another boat the same morning to salvage the damaged food and tow the sinking boat ashore. – VNS
