HCM CITY — Data is no longer a backend utility but the "beating heart" of the artificial intelligence revolution, experts said at the Summer Data & AI Forum 2026, which opened in HCM City on May 8.
The forum, organised by the HCM City Innovation Startup Centre (SIHUB) under the municipal Department of Science and Technology, in collaboration with HCM City Computer Association (HCA), marks Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18).
It aims to bolster the city's digital transformation and innovation ecosystem.
Speaking at the event, Lâm Nguyễn Hải Long, chairman of the HCA, said in the era of AI, data must be viewed as a living entity rather than static files in storage.
"Data is the voice of truth and the only foundation that prevents AI from becoming a 'technological hallucination.' It is the partner that brings real value to life," he said.
Nguyễn Hữu Yên, deputy director of the HCM City Department of Science and Technology, said businesses are moving beyond the experimental phase of AI.
"Companies are now applying AI to practical operations and growth. In the coming period, those who master their data and apply AI effectively will hold a significant competitive advantage," he said.
He further outlined three pillars for the city's technological future: building transparent and connected data infrastructure, fostering innovation through the symbiosis of data and AI, and ensuring digital trust through technological ethics and data security.

The forum also highlighted the growing pressure on physical infrastructure.
Lương Công Luân, director of Western Digital Vietnam, said data storage has become the "bloodstream" of the AI ecosystem.
“If infrastructure fails to keep pace with AI processing speeds, operational efficiency across sectors like healthcare, education, and public services will suffer.”
Echoing this sentiment, Bùi Như Phong, Country Manager of Sandisk Vietnam, urged businesses to prioritise data quality and reliability to ensure the transparency of AI-driven decisions.
The event featured an exhibition with over 50 booths showcasing AI solutions in healthcare, education, and corporate governance.
A "Startup Connection Day" was also held within the framework of the forum to bridge the gap between tech entrepreneurs and international investment funds.
The forum attracted over 500 delegates, including policymakers, technology experts, and industry leaders, reflecting the city’s ambition to become a regional hub for innovation and the digital economy. — VNS
