ĐÀ NẴNG — The Đà Nẵng General Hospital has successfully carried out its first-ever liver transplant, a historic milestone marking a major breakthrough in the hospital’s medical capacity and the city’s healthcare sector.

The operation, conducted with technical support from the Central Military Hospital 108, involved a wife donating part of her liver to save her husband’s life.

During a visit on Friday afternoon, Đà Nẵng Party Secretary Lương Nguyễn Minh Triết congratulated and praised the team of doctors, nurses and staff for their remarkable achievement.

He also expressed deep appreciation to the Central Military Hospital 108 for its dedicated and effective support — not only for this transplant but throughout the long-term collaboration between the two hospitals.

He said the city would continue to facilitate the transfer of advanced medical technologies to ensure more residents can benefit from modern healthcare services.

According to Dr Lê Đức Nhân, Director of Đà Nẵng General Hospital, on August 28 the Ministry of Health officially recognised the hospital as qualified to perform liver transplants using organs from both living and brain-dead donors.

Just over a month later, under the direct technical transfer from the Central Military Hospital 108, the local doctors successfully performed its first transplant from a living donor.

To prepare for this, between 2022 and 2024, the hospital sent 46 medical staff across 12 specialised teams for intensive liver transplant training at the Hà Nội-based Central Military Hospital 108.

In 2025, seven more teams joined advanced courses to strengthen their expertise and master the complex technique. — VNS
