HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam's passport has risen six places to be the 82nd most powerful in the world, the Henley Passport Index has shown in its latest edition.

Việt Nam now occupies the same position as Cambodia, Guinea-Bissau, and Mali, allowing its passport holders to visit 25 destinations without a visa, according to the index’s third quarter report.

In the report for the first quarter of 2023, Việt Nam was in the 88th position, together with Guinea, Madagascar, Togo, and Equatorial Guinea.

Việt Nam’s ranking has jumped by 10 places compared to the end of 2022.

In the Southeast Asian region, Việt Nam’s passports still only rank above Laos (87th position) and Myanmar (89th position).

The ranking is conducted based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which maintains the world’s largest and most accurate database of travel information, combined with Henley’s own algorithm.

Singapore is currently leading the world, with its passport allowing the holder to gain entry to 193 countries and territories without visas.

Germany, Italy, and Spain have the second most powerful passports globally, enabling entry to 190 countries and territories without visas.

Japan, the previous champion, dropped to the third position in this edition’s ranking.

The passports of Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan are the least powerful, according to the index.

According to Passport Index, another passport ranking tool that claims to reflect real-time global ranking with visa waivers and changes frequently updated, Việt Nam’s mobility score in 2023 is at 69 points, unchanged compared to 2022.
