HCM CITY —  The HCM City People’s Committee has cancelled the second round of the high school graduation exam scheduled to take place from August 5-7 because of a spike in new COVID-19 infection cases.

The committee on August 1 said that cancellation of the exams aimed to protect the health and safety of candidates amid the complicated developments of the COVID-19 outbreak.

A total of 3,324 candidates eligible to sit the graduation exam will be able to apply for graduation recognition in accordance with regulations.

HCM City held the first round of the high school graduation exam on July 7 and 8 with more than 86,900 candidates.

Deadline extended

In another matter, public primary and secondary high schools in HCM City have extended the deadline for completing enrollment for first grade and sixth grade for the 2021-2022 school year to August 10 instead of June 31.

In Bình Tân District, around 11,000 students will enter the first grade and 7,800 students will enter the sixth grade in the 2021-2022 academic year, said Ngô Văn Tuyên, head of the district’s Education and Training Office.

About 8,000 online applications for first grade enrollment and 5,000 online applications for sixth grade enrollment have been submitted in the district.

Many households in the district have been under quarantine or have returned to their hometowns during social distancing, leaving thousands of incomplete applications.

Trần Anh Kiệt, head of Bình Thạnh District’s Education and Training Office, said that social distancing orders had made it impossible for parents to submit their children’s admission documents in-person as part of the registration process.

His office asked the district’s People’s Committee to extend the deadline for completing enrollment for first grade and sixth grade for the 2021-2022 school year. —VNS
