HÀ NỘI — The National Assembly appointed Lt. Gen. Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng Minister of Information and Communication this morning with 95.05 per cent support.

Hùng, the former Viettel CEO, was made the acting Minister of Information and Communication in July after an investigation was opened against Mobifone’s bid to acquire 95 per cent shares of Audio Visual Global (AVG). The investigation later revealed a number of violations made by then-minister Trương Minh Tuấn and alleged losses to the State’s budget of nearly US$300 million.

Tuấn was officially stripped of his office yesterday after a decision was passed by a majority of NA deputies.

Hùng, 56, served as Viettel’s CEO since 2014. He became president in 2018 and has played a pioneering role in making Viettel into a telecommunications giant in Việt Nam. — VNS
