HÀ NỘI — The information ministry has a new leader.
Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc yesterday appointed Major General Nguyễn Mạnh Hùng, member of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV)’s Central Committee and Chairman and General Director of the military-run Viettel Group as the acting Minister of Information and Communications.
Earlier, the Politburo issued a decision to appoint Hùng as Secretary of the Party Committee of the ministry for 2016-2021.
Hùng, born in 1962, was trained as a telecommunications engineer in the former Soviet Union (now Russia). He earned a master’s degree in telecommunications in Australia and a master’s degree in business management from the National Economics University.
He was promoted to major general in 2012. In 2016 at the 12th Party Congress, he was elected as a member of the CPV’s Central Committee.
Hùng was appointed Chairman cum General Director of the Viettel Group under a decision of the Prime Minister dated June 14, 2018.
Former Minister of Information Trương Minh Tuấn was suspended on July 16 for wrongdoings in the illegal purchase of private TV firm AVG Audiovisual JSC. — VNS
