AN GIANG — Projects serving APEC 2027 in An Giang Province must be completed on schedule, said Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Phạm Gia Túc.

On Thursday, the deputy PM held a working session with ministries, sectors and An Giang Province officials on the implementation of projects serving APEC 2027, which will take place in Phú Quốc.

Túc said that APEC 2027 is a particularly important political and diplomatic event and a great honour for An Giang Province to host, while also contributing to economic development, enhancing the country’s position and promoting the nation's image.

The Politburo, the Secretariat and Party General Secretary and President Tô Lâm, along with Government leaders, have issued decisive, specific directions for the implementation of projects serving APEC 2027 and other preparatory work, the deputy PM said.

Hosting APEC in any country typically drives strong development in infrastructure and services, thus creating momentum for socio-economic growth, he added.

For An Giang, a locality with strategic importance in national defence and security and significant potential for economic development, investment attraction and tourism, hosting APEC 2027 carries even greater significance.

At the meeting, An Giang leaders reported on the progress of projects serving APEC in the Phú Quốc Special Zone. These include large, technically complex projects requiring substantial funding, manpower and equipment, as well as rapid site clearance, such as Phú Quốc International Airport and the APEC Conference Centre.

Several obstacles in investment and the construction process have been recently resolved.

However, with limited time remaining and a significant workload ahead, An Giang leaders proposed that the Government and the Prime Minister direct ministries and sectors to work with the locality to quickly address new challenges, ensuring all projects are completed on schedule.

Representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Justice, Construction, Industry and Trade, Agriculture and Environment and Foreign Affairs, as well as Vietnam Electricity, reported on the implementation of tasks assigned by the Government and the Prime Minister.

They also responded to An Giang’s proposals for specific projects and suggested key tasks to be carried out as urgently as possible in the months to come.

Preparations for APEC 2027 are also being carried out in a coordinated manner across multiple localities, including infrastructure, accommodation and services for high-level delegations visiting and working in Việt Nam during the event.

The deputy PM said that the time remaining until APEC 2027 is limited, so it is essential to ensure all projects are completed on schedule and meet quality standards to successfully host the event.

He called on An Giang and relevant ministries to clearly define responsibilities, avoid delays or passing the buck, and refrain from vague proposals.

Highlighting the need for urgency, he stressed that this is a crucial political task with no turning back, adding that all work must be completed on time to allow for rehearsals and inspections, rather than finishing close to the event date.

Túc instructed ministries and sectors to immediately implement agreed tasks, particularly those supporting An Giang and businesses, noting that “even a one-day delay will affect overall progress”.

Localities must continue to fulfil assigned tasks with clear timelines and accountability, while maintaining close coordination to promptly and effectively resolve any arising issues, he said. VNS
