JAKARTA — Vietnamese football fans were praised for picking up trash at the Pakansari stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, after Việt Nam was beaten 1-3 by Korea in the semi-final of the Asian Games on Wednesday, online newspaper dantri reported.

Half of the stadium’s B stand was occupied by Vietnamese football fans. Food waste, plastic bags, bottles and flags were strewn around the seats yet fans stayed behind to clean the rows after the match.

Song Min, a Korean football fan said “Vietnamese football fans really impressed me. They are not only are passionate about football, supporting the players but also did good deeds after the match.”

Earlier, hundreds of Vietnamese fans rushed to book last-minute tours to watch the ASIAD football semi-final.

Though Việt Nam couldn’t make it to the final, fans praised the valiant efforts of Việt Nam U23, waiting in the stadium and shouting “Việt Nam! Việt Nam! Park Hang Seo” after the match.

This is the first time Việt Nam has made it to the semi-final of the competition. The team beat Syria 1-0 in a historic quarter-final on Monday and will now play UAE who were beaten 0-1 by Japan for the bronze medal at the Asian Games.

Despite losing the game, Vietnamese fans swarmed Hoàn Kiếm Lake in the capital city to celebrate their team’s performance, lighting flares and singing long into Wednesday night. — VNS
