HÀ NỘI — A special music performance took place on Monday night at the Việt Nam National Academy of Music to mark the nineth Việt Nam Music Day in Hà Nội.

Events were also held across the country to celebrate National Day (September 2) and Việt Nam Music Day (September 3) by the Việt Nam Musians’ Association.

Classical songs and traditional music performances were presented to the audience in the capital with works by famous musicians and composers such as Nguyễn Đình Thi, Văn Cao, Huy Du, Đỗ Hồng Quân and Hoàng Đạm.

Khúc hát ra khơi (Singing to the Sea), Bài ca hy vọng (Song of Hope), Người Hà Nội (Hanoian), Bài ca Hà Nội (Song of Hà Nội), Tình em (Love), Trường ca Sông Lô (Lô River Epic), Lời của đá (Words of Stone),  Cám ơn mẹ (Thank You Mother) were among the works that were well received by the audience.

The works featured periods of the country’s development including the resistance wars against foreign invaders and socio-economic development.

Singers and musicians taking part in the event also included People’s Artist Quang Thọ, Meritorious Artist Cổ Huy Hùng, Bùi Lệ Chi and pianist Trịnh Minh Trang.

The first Việt Nam Music Day was held at the Cultural Friendship Palace in Hà Nội on September 3, 2010.

The event this year honoured the country’s music and encouraged artists to inspire young people, said Đỗ Hồng Quân, chairman of the Việt Nam Musicians’ Association.

On September 3, 1960, President Hồ Chí Minh conducted an orchestra to sing “The Song of Unity” at a gala night in Hà Nội to welcome the success of the third national congress of the Việt Nam Workers’ Party (now the Communist Party of Việt Nam). The day was then selected as Việt Nam Music Day. — VNS
