HÀ NỘI — Now showing in cinemas, Những Tháng Năm Rực Rỡ (Go-Go Sister) is one of two movies released this year that have been included in the five top grossing Vietnamese films.
The comedy/ drama, the latest production by established director Nguyễn Quang Dũng, has so far pulled in VNĐ84 billion (US$3.7 million) at the box office, with an audience of 1.4 million since its release.
Tháng Năm Rực Rỡ is a Vietnamese adaption of the Korean blockbuster, Sunny. It focuses on the friendship and reunification of a group of urban women who used to be friends in their youth.
After meeting her old friend Mỹ Dung, protagonist Hiểu Phương is devastated to discover her high school friend is dying of cancer. In order to comfort her friend, Hiểu Phương reunites their childhood gang "the wild horses", bringing the characters back to the golden days of their youth.
The movie features performances from established and emerging actors such as Hồng Ánh and Mỹ Duyên, who play some of the women in their adult life, and Hoàng Yến and Hoàng Oanh, who play the girls while they are in high school.
Veteran script writer Phạm Thùy Nhân added some flair to the finished piece, giving a viewers the chance to understand more about Vietnamese history, such as the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, and student demonstrations against the war.
Tháng Năm Rực Rỡ is still on showing with English subtitles in cinemas across the country.
The list of the top five highest grossing films in Việt Nam also includes Siêu Sao Siêu Ngố (Super Star Super Silly), which was released during the Lunar New Year holiday period this year.
Directed by Đức Thịnh, the rom — com tells the story of a star in show business. Actor Trường Giang plays two characters as twin brothers, who work as a movie star and a farmer, respectfully. Everything becomes complicated when the star’s manager suggests the farmer take over for his famous brother.
The movie turnover reached VNĐ106 billion becoming the second highest grossing film in the country.
The media and entertainment company CJ CGV Việt Nam’s statistics show that the top five highest grossing Vietnamese films are: Em Chưa 18 (Jailbait) - VNĐ169 billion; Siêu Sao Siêu Ngố - 106 billion; Em Là Bà Nội Của Anh (Sweet 20) - 102 billion; Để Mai Tính 2 (Fool For Love) - 101 billion and Tháng Năm Rực Rỡ. — VNS
