HÀ NỘI — In an era where heritage risks being drowned out by formulaic pop trends, Tính Chuyện Trăm Năm (A Hundred-Year Love Story) brings it back to life – quietly, but powerfully.
Composed by Nguyễn Quang Long and performed by AnhHI Thanh Cường alongside People’s Artist Thanh Hoài, the work stands out not by spectacle, but by its quiet confidence – blending traditional musical storytelling with visual inspiration drawn from Đông Hồ folk paintings.
The result is a cohesive artistic space that rekindles pride in Việt Nam’s cultural roots while speaking fluently to contemporary audiences.
The quiet power of musical minimalism

From a professional standpoint, Tính Chuyện Trăm Năm is a Northern folk-inspired pop composition that achieves a high level of structural refinement.
Nguyễn Quang Long demonstrates compositional maturity through a restrained harmonic progression and unhurried tempo, allowing the song to unfold as a nuanced act of storytelling.
The arrangement’s greatest strength lies in its deliberate simplicity. It avoids heavy electronic basslines or trend-driven drops, instead creating space for acoustic textures, vocal depth and lyrical meaning to take centre stage.
The lyrics echo the cadence of Vietnamese folk poetry, weaving in culturally symbolic imagery such as betel and areca, greying hair, and modest vegetable gardens.
Together, they paint a portrait of sincere, grounded love – one rooted in the enduring values of family life, free from didacticism or artifice.
Where generations meet, and heritage breathes

At the heart of the work is a symbolic collaboration between two generations: veteran artist People’s Artist Thanh Hoài and young singer AnhHI Thanh Cường.
Thanh Cường opens the song with a warm, intimate vocal delivery, expressing a young man’s hope for union and familial acceptance. His clear diction and contemporary sensibility reflect the aspirations of a new generation seeking connection and continuity.
In contrast, yet in perfect harmony, Thanh Hoài’s voice enters as a timeless presence. Her refined traditional techniques, from nuanced vibrato to intricate ornamentation, evoke the role of a motherly figure offering blessing and emotional grounding.
Rather than clashing, the two voices form a seamless dialogue. The younger generation reaches back with respect, while the older generation embraces and transmits heritage forward.
This interplay becomes more than a musical device – it is a metaphor for cultural continuity itself.
Technology as a bridge, not a replacement

The music video further reinforces the project’s artistic vision. By incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) alongside 2D animation, the production team reimagines traditional aesthetics without succumbing to fleeting digital trends.
This approach builds on the success of an earlier release, Thương Câu Dân Ca (Cherishing Folk Melodies) (early 2026), signalling a deliberate and consistent creative direction.
Drawing from Đông Hồ folk art – from liền anh, liền chị in Quan họ folk singing (male and female singers performing traditional call-and-response love duets) to the iconic Đám Cưới Chuột (The Rat Wedding) – the team demonstrates that technology, when guided by cultural understanding, can become a powerful medium for revitalising heritage.
The wedding mouse motif aligns seamlessly with the theme of lifelong union, symbolising prosperity, continuity and fulfilment.
The MV unfolds like a living archive of traditional Vietnamese wedding customs: ceremonial betel trays, gift processions, and the groom in red attire riding through bamboo-lined village paths. Costumes such as áo ngũ thân (five-panel traditional tunic) and áo tấc (ceremonial long gown worn in formal rituals), along with traditional headwear, are rendered with meticulous care, while the warm, nostalgic palette enhances the visual storytelling.
In this context, AI is not a replacement for tradition, but a tool of cultural transmission – echoing the spirit of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW on promoting science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation, which highlights the role of technology in preserving and promoting cultural values in the digital era.
Art in service of cultural continuity
Taken as a whole, Tính Chuyện Trăm Năm stands as a compelling example of thoughtful, responsible artistry.
It succeeds in “awakening heritage” – transforming familiar folk elements into something emotionally resonant, contemporary and widely accessible.
In an increasingly competitive entertainment landscape, the work suggests an alternative path: one grounded in stillness, intellectual depth and refined aesthetics.
More importantly, it aligns with the broader vision set out in Resolution No. 80-NQ/TW on building and developing Vietnamese culture and people to meet the requirements of sustainable national development, which underscores the importance of safeguarding, revitalising and creatively promoting cultural heritage in modern life.
By bridging generations, disciplines and technologies, Tính Chuyện Trăm Năm affirms a lasting truth: Vietnamese music does not need to imitate global trends to resonate. Its greatest strength lies in its own cultural depth – a wellspring capable of shaping both identity and innovation for years to come. — VNS
