Retired actress auctions painting for people affected by Typhoon Yagi

HÀ NỘI — People's Artist Trà Giang has donated VNĐ151 million (US$6,000) to help people in flood-affected area in the northern provinces.

The 82 year old actress auctioned one of her favourite paintings, Hồn Quê (Soul of Countryside), after being moved by the plight of those who lost so much in the storms.

"I feel very sorry for the northern people suffering heavy damage caused by Typhoon Yagi and flood," Trà Giang said. "I decided to auction the painting to support people in need in the northern provinces."

The actress painted Hồn Quê after her trip through the countryside in 2020. In the oil-on canvas painting she captures the beauty of countryside in golden rice season, focusing on a flower with a yellow paddy field and mountains as background.

Hồn Quê is one of 25 paintings that Trà Giang is putting on display at her solo exhibition on October 20. She intended to present the painting to Maii Art Space for charity at the exhibition, but knowing of the plight of people in the the north she asked the space to auction the painting as soon as possible.

Trà Giang is one of the greatest actress of Việt Nam cinema, considered a legend of Vietnamese Revolutionary Cinema and won a Best Actress award at the 8th Moscow International Film Festival.

But she is also an acclaimed painter and has had four solo exhibitions for her artworks. — VNS
