HÀ NỘI - Blockbuster filmmaker Trấn Thành's Mai has won a raft of top prizes at the Golden Kite Awards.

Mai won the best motion picture, the best actress, best the script editor and the best production designer.

The jury panel gave out the awards at a ceremony held in Đó Theatre, Nha Trang City in the southern coastal province of Khánh Hòa last night.

Phưowng Anh Đào stars leading role in Mai Mai which tells the story of a massage therapist named Mai, who faces misfortunes in life.

After moving into an old apartment, she meets Dương, a rich young man who wants to experience a normal life and both fall quickly in love.

A visibly emotional Anh Đào spoke at the awards ceremony saying that Mai's success was a team effort.

"It is great to win the award," Anh Đào said. "The success of the movie was made by all the crew from the director, actors, screenwriters to costumes, make-up, among others."

The actress was also honoured at Đà Nẵng Asian Film Festival 2024 last July, while the movie won Grand Prize for Best Film at the Vietnamese Films Category and its director, Trấn Thành also received Best Director Award.

Mai also won at the Silver Lotus Awards including best motion picture, best actor, best supporting actress and best screenplay at the annual Việt Nam Film Festival.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism chose the film as the Vietnamese entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Category at the 2022 Oscar Awards.

Thành is known for producing many high-grossing movies in Việt Nam.

He rose to fame as a producer with his debut movie and smash hit Bố Già (Dad, I’m Sorry) in 2021, directed by Vũ Ngọc Đãng, which broke box-office records for Vietnamese films, earning $16.1 million.

Among other prize-winners on the night were the best director Lê Thanh Sơn for Móng Vuốt (The Claws), the best actor Quyền Linh and the best television series Gặp Em Ngày Nắng (See You on a Sunny Day) by Lê Đức Hiếu.

The Golden Kite Awards 2024 were held from September 3-10 by the Vietnam Cinema Association.

This year there were the highest ever number of entries registered, 16 movies, 18 TV series, 41 documentaries, 18 scientific films, 14 animated movies, 50 short films and four theoretical and critical works. - VNS
