THANH HOÁ — The provincial People’s Committee recently granted permission for Nghi Sơn Petrochemical Refinery Co. Ltd. to discharge wastewater into the seawater of Hải Yến Commune, Tĩnh Gia District.

The permitted duration for waste discharge is six months, with average discharge volume of 2,250cu.m. per day.

The wastewater, measuring 241.428cu.m., is from the cleaning of pipes (chemical-free), hydraulic test-runs and the construction of the demineralisation plant.

Thanh Hoá Province People’s Committee demanded that the Nghi Sơn Refinery must carry out regular sampling and analysis of the wastewater quality.

The company will only be allowed to discharge this wastewater once these measurement results are deemed acceptable by the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE).

In case the wastewater parameters exceed the standard level, the discharge must be immediately suspended until corrective measures are implemented.

Assuming the oversight role, Thanh Hoá Province DNRE must work in close collaboration with the management boards of Nghi Sơn Industrial Zone and other parks, Tĩnh Gia District People’s Committee and other relevant agencies, to inspect and monitor wastewater quality and water quality in the discharged area and to administer appropriate sanctions when violations occur. — VNS
