HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam claimed two gold medals at the 19th ASEAN University Games which ended yesterday in Naypyitaw, Myanmar.
The titles went to vovinam martial artists in women’s performance with swords.
The Vietnamese athletes also secured two silvers in table tennis and one bronze in karate.
"We didn’t expect medals in table tennis because our athletes took part in this event for the first time,” said coach Bùi Xuân Hà. “They were against strong rivals from Thailand and Singapore who had won international competitions. We did not have gold but silver was a great achievement for their efforts.”
The team won total 16 gold medals, nine silvers and six bronzes, ranking fifth overall.
Thailand were the strongest team winning 62 titles. Indonesia and Malaysia were second and third, respectively. Hosts Myanmar finished fourth. — VNS
