Việt Nam draw with Cuba in eighth round of Chess Olympiad

The Việt Nam women’s chess team tied with Cuba 2-2 in the eighth round of the ongoing 2018 Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia on Tuesday.

HÀ NỘI — The Việt Nam women’s chess team tied with Cuba 2-2 in the eighth round of the ongoing 2018 Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia on Tuesday.

Grandmaster Võ Thị Kim Phụng (Elo 2368) lost to Lisandra Teresa (Elo 2415) in the first board. Phạm Lê Thảo Nguyên (Elo 2347) beat Lopez Yaniet (Elo 2281) in the second board to help Việt Nam level the point.

In the third and fourth board, Hoàng Thị Bảo Trâm and Nguyễn Thị Mai Hưng tied with their rivals.      

With this draw, Việt Nam rose up two steps to reach 17th after eight matches. They will next face Georgia 3, who are in 56th place.

On the men’s side, Việt Nam also tied with Kazakhstan 2-2.

Top Vietnamese player Lê Quang Liêm (Elo 2715) lost to Jumabayev Rinat (Elo 2605). Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn (Elo 2620) continued to prove his impressive form with a win against Ismagambetov Anuar (Elo 2538).

Trần Tuấn Minh (Elo 2491) was defeated by Kazhgaleyev Murtas (Elo 2582). Sixteen-year-old Nguyễn Anh Khôi (Elo 2463) drew with Makhnev Denis (Elo 2449).

After eight rounds, the Việt Nam male team temporarily rank 18th. They will take on the Swiss, in 39th place, in the ninth round. — VNS
