The Vietnamese women’s team won two silver medals at the 2018 Asian Team Chess Championship which wrapped up in Iran over the weekend.

HÀ NỘI — The Vietnamese women’s team won two silver medals at the 2018 Asian Team Chess Championship which wrapped up in Iran over the weekend.

Despite losing to China in the very first match in the standard chess category, the team improved their performance when competing against Uzbekistan, India and Kazakhstan. Grandmasters Phạm Lê Thảo Nguyên and Nguyễn Thị Mai Hưng got 4.5 points and 5 points, respectively, helping the team gain 11 points after seven rounds to get the silver. 

China took the title in this category with 13 points, while India won bronze with eight points.

In the blitz chess division, the Vietnamese women’s team also won a silver medal with 12 points after eight matches. India won gold with 13 points and China got bronze with 10 points.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese men’s team ranked 10th among 14 participating teams in the standard event and eighth place out of 12 teams in the blitz event. — VNS
