HÀ NỘI — Top Vietnamese chess player Lê Quang Liêm finished second at the ninth Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament which concluded in Hainan Province, China yesterday.
In the last match, Liêm, who has an Elo rating of 2728, beat Vidit Santosh Gujrathi of India (Elo 2718) after 75 moves.
At the World Cup 2017, Gujrathi defeated Liêm in the second round.
After seven matches, HCM City-born Liêm gained four points to defend his second position. Yu Yangyi of China took the title with 4.5 points. Wei Yi of China and Vladimir Fedoseev of Russia shared third place with 3.5 points each.
With this result, Liêm will adds five points to his Elo rating and climbs to No 23 in the world.
The event’s eight-player single round-robin featured five international grandmasters, as well as several top Chinese players. It had the total prize fund of US$60,000. — VNS
