Phượng shines to help HAGL beat Thanh Hóa

HÀ NỘI — Striker Nguyễn Công Phượng only goal helped Hoàng Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) beat Thanh Hóa in the 10th round of the V.League 1 yesterday.

Phượng’s goal came from a long shot in the 16th minute which beat goalie Bùi Tiến Dũng of Thanh Hóa, who shone for the national team in the AFC U23 Championship in China in January, in which Việt Nam won a silver medal.

The central province of Nghệ An-born player’s early goal gave his side confidence, but despite piling on the pressue HAGL failed to score again in the first half.

After the break, the last season’s runners-up Thanh Hóa fought back.

They had a chance to score in the 72nd minute but Trọng Hoàng’s header struck the crossbar.

Thanh Hóa created many chances in the last minutes, but HAGL’s goalkeeper Phạm Văn Tiến couldn’t be beaten.

In other fixtures, striker Mạc Hồng Quân’s goal in added time gave Quảng Ninh Coal a win away to Hải Phòng at the Lạch Tray Stadium.

Elsewhere, Sanna Khánh Hòa drew 2-2 with Nam Định; HCM City tied goalless with defending champions Quảng Nam; and Hà Nội bested Sông Lam Nghệ An 2-1.

After 10 rounds, Hà Nội top the table with 26 points, followed by Quảng Ninh with 20 points and Bình Dương with 17 points. — VNS
