HÀ NỘI — Vietnamese Grandmaster (GM), Lê Quang Liêm, won a bronze medal at the second International Mind Sports Association Elite Games, ongoing in Huai’an City, Jiangshu, China.
Liêm pocketed 4.5 points after seven matches in the men’s rapid chess event.
He ranked behind Dmitry Andreikin of Russia (4.5 points) and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan (4.5 points). Despite earning the same number of points, Liêm was at third place because of his lower parameter.
He lost only one match to Mamedyarov in the third round but secured two important wins over GM Wang Hao in the last round and GM Yu Yangyi in the fourth round. Both the two Chinese GMs have a higher Elo rating than Liêm.
The Mind Sports Games’ chess event gathered 12 leading men masters and 12 women masters.
After rapid chess, they will all participate in the 22-match blitz chess (December 12-13) and five-round basque chess (December 14-15).
The total bonus is 50,000 euros (US$59,000), with the male winner walking away with 11,000 euros ($13,000), while the women will get 7,500 euros ($8,800).
The Games are organised annually, with five events of chess, xiangqi (Chinese chess), go, bridge and draughts.
