HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam have four athletes in the world top 20 of the billiards three-cushion event, according to the latest release of the World Billiards Union.
South Korea are the strongest country with five representatives.
The most remarkable case is Mã Minh Cẩm’s, who grabbed a bronze medal at the world championship in Bolivia on Sunday. Cẩm earned 59 points from the tournament and jumped six places from No 23 to No 17.
His teammate Dương Anh Vũ, meanwhile, entered the championship’s last-16 round. He moved up six rungs to No 19. It has taken him three years to return to the top 20.
Nguyễn Quốc Nguyện, the Asian champion, was, however, not successful at the Bolivian event. He remains at No 10, the highest ranking for Việt Nam.
Trần Quyết Chiến was, meanwhile, ousted from the first round of the world tournament. He is the only Vietnamese to move down one place to No 16.
Two other cueists close to the top 20 are Mã Xuân Cường, No 23, and Ngô Đình Nại, No 30.
Talking about Vietnamese billiards, former Southeast Asian Games winner Dương Hoàng Anh said three-cushion is developing strongly. Athletes were competing regularly at international tournaments, bringing them to a high level, much better than the progress during Anh’s generation.
Anh believed the world should keep an eye on Việt Nam in the near future. — VNS
